Do Students Like Living in Dorms?

A party life with no parents? An independent space of my own? The crazy and wild parties in various houses? These are some things people think about when they opt to live in a dorm. There is more to dorm life than parties. Sure, parties are part of dorm life, but other pros and cons of dorm life vary from one student to another.

One should be able to evaluate the reasons behind living in dorms to give the best experience or feedback to others. This article will tackle the surprising things one experiences living in dorms, why a student should choose dorm life, and whether students love dorm life.

Surprising things one learns about living in the dorms.

  1. One can acquire roommates.

Having roommates only happens when one chooses a shared room. Students in college come from different towns and states; thus, one gets to meet people who are different or relatively new to them. Most colleges randomly select roommates, making students socialize more and acquire new friends. It also happens that friends from the same high school or town choose the same college and apply to be roommates.

Going with your friend to the same college and acquiring the same rooms is rare, but students can make arrangements to be roommates during the next semester of their studies.

2. One finds themselves living in a fishbowl.

Living in a fishbowl means that one lacks private space while living in dorms. Dorm life is a public space because one is surrounded by a group of people or friends, depending on how one views the rest. Everybody in the dorm knows about the business of another, whether one is in or out, whether you fought with your friends, whether you got a boyfriend or broken up with your boyfriend, whether you ate or not, e.t.c.

Privacy is hard to be achieved in the dorm, even if you shut your room and never come out. If you are a person who appreciates their personal space, then living in a dorm might not be the very best experience for you.

Good sanitation is never a plus. Living in the dorms can be gross because one is surrounded by many people who carry around a lot of germs. With improper hygiene, the dorms are a perfect environment for the habitation of bacteria and viruses.

One has to share a meal in the cafeteria with others, use the same bathrooms, and open doorknobs that various people have touched. One is bound to get sick when living in the dorm if they don’t observe hygiene.

3. One can make the best memories.

Most people in their lives met in college and became great friends. One can meet best friends from their dorms and cherish them even after college. Also, living in the dorms makes one create great memories that they cherish forever. One attends parties at their dorms and has study partners and groups for late study sessions.

Living in the dorms develops a different ideology or perspective about life. It is also in the dorms where you will find out that you love and enjoy the company of the person you share the least common traits with.

Reasons why a student should choose dorm life?

It is more convenient

Living in a dorm could prove helpful when one needs help studying or making friends. Also, many students who live in the dorm have many great opportunities at their disposal. In addition, if one is coming from a different state to join the university and they don’t know the place, the school accommodation will come in handy.

Short distance to classes

Most dorms are usually located within the campus or near the campus, thus making it easier for students to access their courses. One can set the alarm early in the morning to prepare themselves before walking to classes. If one lives in the dorm, there will be no need to pay for transport or a taxi for a distance that they can walk. For example, Washington State University(WSU) provides accommodation on its campus. WSU housing also provides food that students can eat and saves them from the hassle of arranging food for themselves.

WSU housing also provides the students with advertisements about the student apartments near its campus for students who prefer to live independently or have their private space. The student apartments offer on-site amenities such as a computer lab with free printing, which cuts on costs for students, a tavern gaming style room, a pool, and a fitness center.

Conclusion

Dorm life brings fun yet unexpected circumstances to the students. Whether live or not to live in the dorm is left to the student to decide after weighing the pros and cons of that life from the list above.
